Ghosts of Mississippi
on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.
in the Auditorium at the Lawrence Public Library.
Ghosts of Mississippi dramatizes the trial of Byron De La Beckwith for the assassination of 1960s civil rights leader Medgar Evers. It starts with the murder, and includes events surrounding the first two trials which ended with hung juries. The movie portrays District Attorney Bobby De Laughter's alliance with Evers' widow, Myrlie Evers, as he becomes more invested in bringing Beckwith to trial for the third time 30 years later. Some of the characters are played by the actual participants in this story. DeLaughter is played by Alec Baldwin, Beckwith is played by James Woods, and Myrlie Evers is played by Whoopi Goldberg.
The program will include a post-screening discussion of the law and the legal system as portrayed in the film, led by a local attorney.
