Topic: Does the Second Amendment Allow Ownership of Assault Weapons?
Submission Deadline: Midnight, April 4, 2011 ( )
Eligibility: Senior students attending a high school in Douglas County, Kansas.
Rules: The essay length must be 500 to 1000 words, written by the student. Quotes or cites must be properly attributed to their source. The essay must be submitted electronically in MS Word (doc) format as an attachment to the following email address: division4@douglas-county.com. The submission must include a separate cover page with the name of the high school and the student’s name, phone number, home address and email address. The essay must not include any information that might identify the school or student. The cover page will be removed and a number assigned to the essay before it is reviewed by the judges. Criteria for judging include content, analysis and style.
Consent to Publish: By participating, the winners give permission to the Douglas County Law Library and Douglas County Bar Association to publish their essays in their newsletters and on their websites.
Notification: Authors of the top three essays will be notified no later than April 20, 2011 and will be invited to attend the Law Day Luncheon on May 2, 2011, when winners will be announced and prizes awarded.
Prizes: 1st place: $1,500.00; 2nd place: $1,000.00; 3rd place: $500.00.
