Topic: The Significance of Separation of Church and State in Our Government
Deadline: April 6, 2009 ()
Eligibility: Seniors attending a high school in Douglas County, Kansas who will be advancing their formal education after graduation.
Rules: The essay length should be 500 to 1000 words, written by the student. Quotes or cites must be properly attributed to their source. The essay must be submitted electronically in MS Word (doc) format to division4@douglas-county.com. The first (cover) page should contain only the student's name, address, phone number, email address (if any) and name of high school; the essay itself should start a new page. No information indentifying the student is to be contained in the essay itself. When printed for judging, the cover page will be removed and a number assigned to the essay before it is reviewed by the panel members who will be judging the essays.
Consent to Publish: By participating, the winners give permission to the Douglas County Law Library and Douglas County Bar Association to publish their essays in their newsletters and on their websites.
Notification: Authors of the top three essays will be notified no later than April 22, 2009. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the annual Law Day luncheon.
Scholarship Prizes: 1st place: $1,500.00; 2nd place: $1,000.00; 3rd place: $500.00.
